Jonmichael Hands (Storage_JM) from Chia Decentral and Chia Network’s VP of Storage has put out an interview with the CTO of Phison, Sebastion Jean, going over their new high-write consumer SSD platform line-up they are going to begin selling through their partner’s soon. The SSD platform’s will be called the Maker and Maker Pro lineups and they will offer both high write endurance as well as high saturated drive write performance. These SSDs will not be sold directly, but through SSD partners.
JM does some benchmarking with them in them, and a mini review but the really interesting pieces are the really excellent recap on what causes drive performance and lifetime issues, write amplification, which I have been harping on since the blog started and Phison’s CTO describing the market segment they are going after here.
Chia plotting is just one possibility and to be honest one of the less interesting pieces. The ability to get enterprise level performance characteristics in a 2280 form factor NVME drive is very exciting for both home server cache drives as well as scratch drives for content creators. Check out the full interview below, its about half an hour long but well worth it if the topic interests you.
