In a moment of “wtf where they thinking” the CEO of EcoChia has admitted on their Discord server to faking netspace and lying to their farmers. This is something that a lot of folks have been suspecting about some pools but this is the first Chia pool that has flat out admitted it yet.
This is quite the admission. First to do the dishonest act, the lie about their pool space. This is something that a lot of pool operators have likely considered to convince farmers to grow the pool and hit their critical mass. But I’m willing to bet most flat out refused to do this. I don’t think any of the pool operators I have spoken to would do this.
Their claim about needing to be at 30PiB to avoid the exploit that Maxiopool says took them out is also an exaggeration. There is no “critical mass” that will save a pool or prevent this exploit. The higher the proportion of netspace a Lazy Farmer has the more they will disrupt the pool over a shorter time, but being at 30PiB doesn’t protect you.
I don’t know what to think about coming forward on their own. It feels like a mistake unless someone was threatening to expose them or their own farmers were starting to get upset. I’m honestly not even sure we should believe the rest of this statement, and that farmers in that pool should look over their payments very carefully. Honestly, I don’t think dishonesty should be rewarded and there are lots of pools out there that do not lie to their users. If you farm with EcoChia maybe you want to check one out.
UPDATE: I have been shown evidence that the pressure came directly from the support team for EcoChia and that they figured out what was going on, got confirmation from the CEO and pressured him to release a public statement. There are good people helping with that pool at least. I would hope the EcoChia community restrict any ill will towards the CEO alone and not the support team running the pool.
