Its a big sea of Chia forks out there, and it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. In a lot of people’s minds, or at least mine, it really did seem like it was Flax then and everyone else. And the common wisdom was that changing the plot style from Chia would be a death sentence, the only way forward was to re-use their plots. But as we explored previously, Chives Coin has a bit of a different approach and it might be working.
To be honest I thought the “something different” that Chives was doing was going to hurt them ultimately. But it seems that might not actually be happening. Mad Max is looking into them, and working with their team to get his plotter up to snuff for plotting Chives plots. And it is, and works great! I plotted a number of k29s using the Mad Max Plotter.
The other prominent Chia person looking at Chives closely is Space Pool’s Caleb Curry. This surprised me, since neither Caleb nor Max has seemed particularly interested in Chia forks until now. So I took some time over the weekend to speak to both of them about it and I got different versions of the same answer back.
They are interested because Chives is doing something different than Chia and the Chia forks. Caleb especially thinks that the way to make money off Crypto is to be there very early so looking into Chives is exploratory to him. But he only farms Flax and Chives (and obviously Chia, and the nightmare fuel of his Ethereum mine).
Max in particular thinks that the forks that just use Chia plots are boring, and from his perspective I can see that. Nothing to do there. But with Chives they are trying to do their own thing and by preventing Chia plots they avoid the problem of growing too big and just having some Chia whales join the network and upset everything. Max also doesn’t think that even with K29s there is a large risk of grinding attack, that maybe you could grind 1 plot on a datacenter AI GPU like the A100 80GB, but that the risk is so low he doesn’t think its worth considering. That really puts the K32 vs K33/K34 debate and if Bladebit makes K32 obsolete debates into a new light. Max knows plots, and he thinks we’re fine.
Anyway, the long gist of this post is that I’m farming Flax and Chives now. I think that the support from Max and Caleb was enough to take a closer look, and I think I like what I see here. They have their founding team on the website, and for all know those are actual real people. They seem to have a pretty good plan for what they are doing. And I can fit the plots inside the space left on my disks from K32s for Chia. And I don’t have to even give my Chives VM any access to my Chia plots or anything else. Its kind of win/win for me.
This isn’t an endorsement for Chives itself, but it does suggest we might be entering a new Phase of Chia forks and I like that idea. Everyone seems to be trying to do their own thing now, with Flax launching 2.0 soon and Chives abandoning Chia plots altogether. I wonder what else we will see soon.
