Today we have another farmers story, by another John (Yes, this time ‘h’ included). This post is part of an article series about your farming setups. He is having a mid sized, customer grade Chia farm with a mix of internal and external HDDs.
If you have an interesting setup and want to have some internet fame please ping @speedmann#6896 on discord or let me know in one of the official channels that you are interested. (Editor’s note: You can also contact the site or by email [email protected] and Speedmann will get it) We also now have a form which you can fill in.
Who are you? Some background about yourself please
My name is John, I’m an IT business owner in Belgium who offers consultancy and other IT services to business owners.
Why farm Chia?
I’ve always been looking from a distance to crypto mining but found that it was too energy consuming. Then around April I heard about Chia. So i started buying some disks to start up.
What hardware are you using?
CPU/APU: Ryzen 5800x
RAM: 32GB
SSD: Gigabyte gp-ag42tb 2TB
OS: Windows 10
Storage: 20 disks( internal + external) 12-18TB
Total farm size: 264TiB

Do you have a special networking/distributed farming setup?
No, Single full node farm with sata and USB disks.
Given the chance to start over in march again, what would you do different?
For once i would have started in march and not by the end of april.
In the beginning i made some mistakes in plotting that wasted valuable time.
Some of my mistakes included windows updates during plotting. I’ve lost several plots due to this. I also would have choosen to go for madmax plotter earlier if i had the chance to do so. For one last thing, i tried plotting with some ineffiecent systems before choosing my final system which made plotting much easier and more efficient.
Are you pooling or solo farming?
Yes pooling, with my luck it’s the best choice.
How much did you invest in your setup?
I have spent more than 10k€ for my setup.
How time consuming is running your farm? Do you have monitoring?
Once the setup was done, it was not time consuming anymore.
For Monitoring, i just do regular checks if everything is working as expected.
How profitable is your farming setup?
At the current Chia price and without accounting for electricity, my farm will take around 6 years to break even.
Of course, we all know that the price will go up in the future and that will reduce the time for my farm to become profitable. (Speedmann Note: Chia to the moon 🚀🚀🚀).
To assist with that goal, i also bought some Chia.
What are your plans for the future? Will you keep farming?
I would like to get to 1PB because it makes a nice round figure.Yes i absolutly will keep farming. i strongly believe in Chia. it’s the next step in crypto.
