Reality ItSelf aka. Chia Pass Farm
Why farm chia?
In February I wanted to begin mining crypto. However, I did not have a PC powerful enough to mine the big ones (BTC – ETH). As I began looking around for a coin I could mine I found Chia. After looking into how it is farmed, I gave it a try on their testnet. I completed my first plot on Feb 17th.
I felt like farming Chia fit into my concern with how humans impact the environment. If we are so smart we can improve our tech and create more sustainable ways to build our future. So I felt like Chia was attempting to learn from past crypto mistakes, and do it in a way that was a step in the right direction. I was sold on the technology.
One other thing, I named my farm – ‘Chia Pass Farm’. It is inspired by the movie 5th Element and the ‘multi-pass’ that was in it. It gave the person holding all access pass to the world. I wondered if Chia could become something like that. So I named the farm that for fun.
What hardware are you using?
I have an HP Windows desktop with 32GB RAM, i7-4770 3.40GHz, 1tb SSD – it serves as my farmer.
Do you have a special networking/distributed farming setup?
Not sure I would call it special. I have one PC serving plots (my everyday use PC), my farmer hosts about 40% of my total space, I also have a NAS located in another room with additional hdds attached. I run my farming network through a secondary router that sits behind my modem/router from the internet company. Everything seems to run fine, and I rarely have stales.
My total farm space is 138TB+.
Given the chance to start over in march again, what would you do different?
Nothing. Did my best with what I had. 🙂
Are you pooling or solo farming?
Pooling, but I won 2 (4 chia) blocks before netspace exploded (I had less than 60TB), then nothing until I started pooling with Maxio.
Their payout method was susceptible to the ‘dead weight‘ attack. It ended up happening and they shut the pool down.
I then moved to Space Pool. Been happy ever since. My farm is also a combination of multiple people who have contributed space (HDDs). I would call it a co-op farm, but we are not accepting any new people for now.
How much did you invest in your setup?
Close to 3K + or -. Sold 1 Chia at 1K and immediately and bought the NAS server. So some of my investment came right from Chia farming. I am not investing in any expansion of the farm right now.
How time consuming is running your farm?
Used to consume tons of time. But now, I only track my payouts, and occasionally, when dust storms hit, my farmer blue-screens. First time it happened I ended up restoring the OS and starting over (resynching db file). Last dust storm it just ended up working again without any headache. Not sure if they are connected.
Do you have monitoring?
Space Pool has a nice app. I wake up to your farm being offline and get on the job to fix the situation.
How profitable is your farming setup?
I will know in about 5 years or more. 🙂
What are your plans for the future? Will you keep farming?
When price gets climbing back up I will start to expand my farm again. In the meantime, I will buy the dip we are in when funds are available.
I Absolutely will keep farming.
